About My SE Tax Calc
My SE Tax Calc is a set of free calculators for people paid on a 1099: freelancers, independent contractors, and anyone with self-employment income beside a W-2 job.
What the site does
It works out federal self-employment tax, federal income tax, the four quarterly estimated payments and the business mileage deduction. Each calculator opens on a worked example, shows its working, and needs no account.
Published by Kordal Systems
My SE Tax Calc is built and maintained by Kordal Systems. We build financial tools for independent workers, and we hold them to a simple standard: every figure the tool produces should trace back to a source you can open and check for yourself. That is why the methodology page cites the statute, the revenue procedure and the Federal Register notice behind each constant, and why we would rather show you nothing than show you a number we cannot stand behind.
How the figures are checked
The calculations follow IRS forms line by line: Schedule SE (Form 1040) for self-employment tax, the rate tables in the governing Revenue Procedure for income tax, and Form 8995 and Form 8995-A for the section 199A qualified business income deduction. Every rate and threshold is read from one file of constants, each with its source and the date it was verified, and we re-verify them against those sources each year.
Read the full calculation methodology for the formula behind each figure.
Your figures
The calculators run in your browser: the numbers you enter are worked on there and are not sent to us, and closing the tab clears them. If you press Copy a link to these figures, they go into a link on your clipboard and travel wherever you paste it. The contact form is different: it sends what you type to a third-party email processor, and the privacy policy names it and says exactly what is sent.
