Why self-employment tax is most of the bill

At $50,000, self-employment tax is $7,065 and income tax $2,667, so 72.6% of the bill is self-employment tax. It is a flat 15.3% of net earnings, which are 92.35% of profit or $46,175 here, with no deduction in front of it.

Income tax reaches only what is left after three deductions: half the self-employment tax ($3,533), the standard deduction ($16,100) and the § 199A deduction ($6,073). Together they take $25,706 off the top and leave $24,294 to tax.

The § 199A deduction, far below its threshold

Taxable income here is a long way under the $201,750 threshold for a single filer, so none of the deduction's business limits apply. A consultant or an accountant, both specified service businesses, gets it on the same terms as a plumber, and it makes no difference whether the business pays wages or owns equipment (26 U.S.C. § 199A(b)(3) and (d)(3)).

One limit does apply: the deduction cannot exceed 20% of taxable income before it. 20% of qualified business income would be $9,293, but 20% of the $30,367 of taxable income is $6,073, and that is the deduction.

What another $1,000 of profit costs

$231 of federal tax: $141 of self-employment tax and $90 of income tax. Income tax stays in the 12% bracket until profit passes about $85,100, where the 22% bracket begins.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I save from each payment on $50,000 of 1099 income?

About 19.5%, the effective federal rate at this income: $9,732 on $50,000. State income tax, where your state has one, comes on top.

Do I have to make quarterly payments on $50,000 of 1099 income?

Yes. $9,732 is well past the $1,000 line in 26 U.S.C. § 6654(e)(1), so four payments of $2,433 are due, on April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15, 2027. Paying less risks the underpayment penalty worked out on Form 2210.

What tax bracket is $50,000 of 1099 income in?

The 12% bracket. After deductions $24,294 is taxable: the first $12,400 at 10% and the rest at 12%, which comes to $2,667, or 5.3% of profit.
